Energy Transfers

Learning Target:
92324 – explain energy transfers in simple electric circuits

DO NOW:
Take out your circuit lab and practice test

Homework:
Study for your test

Today in Class:
Students will continue working on their electricity standard; however, we will be shifting focus a bit as we gather today.  I previously told students that they would have through Thursday to work on the lab; in order to improve efficiency and keep frustration and idleness at bay, we’ll be finishing up the lab as a class using the PHET simulation (you can download and run the activity below).  This simulation is a great way to visualize what is happening to the electrons and flow of charge.  While it might not be as cool as making our own real circuits, this is better in some ways.

Circuit Lab Continued

Learning Target:
92324 – explain energy transfer in simple electric circuits

Homework:
Keep working on the Practice Test

Today in Class:
Students will continue to work on the electric circuits lab in class.  We are intentionally spending a lot of time “playing” with the lab equipment so students can familiarize themselves with electrical circuits.  We are hoping to capitalize on the intrinsic curiosity of students during this activity.  Students can demonstrate the same level of curiosity at home using the PHET simulation.  This simulation can help students in asnwering the questions on the practice test.

Attention:
Regular students will be taking their tests on MONDAY

HP Students will take their tests on FRIDAY.

Circuit Lab

Learning Target:
92324 – explain energy transfer in simple electric circuits

DO NOW:
Pick up the electricity circuit lab and read through the introduction and directions

Homework:
Study for your test (tentatively scheduled for Friday)

Today in Class:
HP classes will have the opportunity to experiment with electrical circuits this morning.  Today’s lab is a fairly simple introduction to electricity but allows students the opportunity to discover some of the key concepts involved with electricity.

Reviewing Electricity

Learning Target:
92324 – explain and calculate current, voltage and resistance

DO NOW:
Pick up your notes from the video on Friday and take out your 20.2 and 20.3 WS

Homework:
Start working on the Practice Test and Interactive Lab

Today in Class:
Students will be working on studying for test.  The test is still tentatively set for Friday.  Students will have the opportunity to get questions answered on their homework from last week, discuss notes on the video, and begin work on energy transfers within a circuit.  The practice test will be very helpful for the test.  There is even an interactive “lab” that will be helpful.  Click on the PHET link to get to the interactive lab.

Bill Nye “Electric Current”

Learning Target:
92324 – explain current, voltage, and resistance

Homework:
Get started on some make up work / test corrections / etc…-notice the deadlines for credit on these items!

Today in Class:
Students will be reviewing the information from previous lessons, checking their work on the worksheets, and watching the video on Electric current.  I will be absent today due to an appointment so if students need assistance with test corrections, or retakes, they will need to check with me next week.
