Boat Races Next Week!
Good Morning Students and Parents!
I wanted to pass on a few announcements prior to the boat races next week. Remember, all parents are invited to watch the boat races. Feel free to invite siblings, grandparents, important people in your life, etc…We will be racing our boats on Tuesday and Wednesday next week. Your student will race either of the days during their science class. All students have been assigned a race day already and should pass on that information to parents.
A few announcements about the races:
- Groups need to bring duct tape on the day of their race.
- All themes must be school appropriate according to the theme contract signed by groups and approved by Mr. Kaylor or me.
- The most efficient method of playing music is a burned CD – there is no guarantee that a CD won’t be damaged, misplaced, or trashed. (however, we do have the capacity to play from an iPod or other device.
- all students should plan on wearing shirts and shorts and bring a towel.
- no students will be given passes to their next class on account of the boat races.
We look forward to the races and hope you can come to participate in the festivities. Again, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Central Container – they graciously donated all of the cardboard that we are using for our project. If you get the opportunity, please help us thank them!
Theme and Race Days Finalized
Students will be finalizing their theme today; this includes identifying which song will be played during their race. Remember that all components of the theme must be school appropriate and that any deviations from the signed theme may result in consequences.
Also, students will be notified of their race day today. Remember that half the class will race on Tuesday and the other half on Wednesday. I was able to accommodate all parent requests that were submitted to me. If you haven’t made a request but are interested in coming, please ask your son or daughter when they have been scheduled to race. If they won’t tell you for fear that you may actually show up, I’ll let you know! Please come!
Boat Races Fast Approaching
There are a lot of important announcements relative to wrapping up the boat project, please read them in their entirety!
Individual packets must be finished before participating in the group design/building process
It is hard to believe but several students still have not completed their individual packet. I have no problem preventing students from participating or watching the races if their individual packet is not completed. This project is a process and, despite what students think, the academic part (individual packet) is the most important and must be completed prior to the “fun” part.
Boat building starts on Monday! – student groups are not allowed to begin building until their group packet is complete, this includes an approved theme!
- Each student should plan to bring at least two rolls of duct tape (labeled with the student’s name on the inside of the roll)
- Students bring tape at their own risk, it should be located in their locker until needed during science. I am not responsible for lost or stolen tape.
- Please help us review utility knife safety with your child. Students have been taught the safe and proper use of the utility knives and unsafe practices will not be tolerated.
- All aspects of the theme (music, decorations, costumes, etc…) need to be school appropriate. Inappropriate themes will not be allowed to participate in the races.
Boat Races are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday (March 6th and 7th)
All parents, siblings, etc…are invited to attend the boat races and participate in this fun event for our students. Don’t listen to your student if they try to convince you otherwise! Many parents come and watch and they don’t even have to admit your presence. If you are willing and able to come and watch, please let your child know or let me know so that I can ensure that your student will race on the day you are available. I will try to make sure that all requests are accommodated but I can’t make any guarantees. I know that some of you already informed me of when you can come, please remind me!
How is your boat progress?
Students should have their scale model boat built and tested by Thursday at the latest. If your boat is tested on Thursday, you can complete the engineering packet over the weekend and be ready for group design on Monday (depending on the score of your answers).
